About Spamalot

From BROADWAY and the WEST END comes a new smash hit musical…

Eric Idle of Monty Python pioneered this musical in 2005, when he said “I like the title Spamalot a lot. We tested it with audiences on my recent US tour and they liked it as much as I did… It comes from a line in the movie which goes, ’We eat ham, and jam and Spam a lot.’”

‘Doffing the hat’ to the fact that there was a hit Broadway musical called Camelot is icing on the cake. The musical officially opened on Broadway on March 17, 2005. Mike Nichol was director and Casey Nicholaw choreographer.  The production won the Tony Award for Best Musical and was nominated for 14 Tony Awards. The show played its final performance on January 11, 2009 after 35 previews and 1,574 performances. It was seen by more than two million people and grossed over US $175 million, recouping its initial production costs in the first six months (a modern miracle!).

The original Broadway cast included Tim Curry as King Arthur, Michael McGrath as Patsy, David Hyde Pierce as Sir Robin, Hank Azaria as Sir Lancelot, Sara Ramirez as The Lady of the Lake with John Cleese as the (pre-recorded) Voice of God. During the run, notable cast replacements included Alan Tudyk, Merle Dandridge, Clay Aiken and Tasmanian born Michael Siberry as King Arthur.

A North American Tour continuously ran from May 2006 until October 2009 in numerous cities, with Michael Siberry as King Arthur for much of it.

The London production opened at the Palace Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, 17 October 2006. Curry reprised his Broadway role as King Arthur for the first few months. Notable cast replacements include Peter Davison and Sanjeev Bhaskar as King Arthur.  The London production closed on 3 January 2009 after two-and-a-half solid years and in 2010 the show is touring the UK.
